Pruning & Thinning

There are many different terms used to describe different methods of pruning and thinning trees and hedges, for example, crown lifting, crown reduction and pollarding. These are all different techniques used to achieve the aim of reducing the volume of a tree or hedge. Sometimes this can include reducing its height, or can simply be thining out branches to allow more light to come through. Pruning and thinning techniques can also improve the shape of a tree or hedge; in the case of a tree, this might be to stop it encroaching on to a building and either causing an obstruction or blocking out light, and in the case of hedges it may be to remove overgrown sections that intrude onto paths, for example, providing a neat finish and safe passage. It is also possible to remove individual tree branches that are causing problems or are affected by disease that might spread to the rest of the tree.

Emergency & Dangerous Trees

Sadly trees are often victims of adverse weather, with branches coming down, and sometimes entire trees toppling over in storms and high winds, often obstructing roads or falling onto buildings. When this happens we are called in to safely clear away the fallen tree. This often requires heavy lifting equipment, ropes and rigging, as well as judicious use of a chainsaw!

It is the responsibility of the owner of the tree to ensure its safe removal, so if your tree is in a dangerous state or has been damaged by the weather, contact us immediately.

Tree Felling/ Tree Removal

Directional felling is the image most people will have of cutting down a tree, where a wedge is taken from the bottom and the entire tree falls over (traditionally to shouts of "timber"!!). There is a great deal of skill required to do this safely. The tree must be cut in precisely the right place and at just the right angle and depth to ensure the tree falls exactly where required - into a large open space and not onto nearby buildings or car parks etc!

Where directional felling is not possible, the tree can be dismantled from the top down, by cutting sections of it away a piece at a time. This process can sometimes be carried out from a mobile elevated platform, but where space is very restricted requires high climbing, roping and rigging techniques. Sectional dismantling, is however, effectively used to safely take down trees in the most restricted and awkward of places.
